Mike Stone

Mike along with his partner Sue started their first windsurfing business on a lake in Cambridge in 1985,

Teaching the sport and running a successful hire centre, retail shop and members club.

After 10 very happy years they decided 12 hrs a day ….7 days a week…10 months a year was too

much and purchased ‘Kent Windsurfing’. They moved to Kent in 1995 and again had 10 very happy years

retailing windsurf equipment but the lure of the South coast was too much, with a sunnier and generally

windier climate and in late 2005 sold the Kent shop and moved to Worthing on the West Sussex coast.

In February 2006 ‘WORTHING WATERSPORTS’ opened up for business. The shop has now

been open for 18 months and benefits from Mike’s excellent knowledge and experience

in all watersports, and his time within the industry. The shop is going from strength to strength.

Mike sails to a very high standard and can be seen sailing at the several locations available here at

Worthing on the numerous windy days. He regularly returns to his old stomping ground, Minster in

Kent and loves to sail in warmer climates when ever possible.

What age did you start windsurfing?

29 years old

With Worthing Watersports since?

Is it 4 yrs or 25 yrs ? ….Along with my partner, Sue Reynolds, we started in Cambridge. We took over an existing lake business specializing in windsurfing…. teaching, hiring and club facilities and ran the lake for 10 years. We then purchased a windsurf shop in Gillingham and moved to North Kent in 1995 and ran that shop for 10 years until we decided to sell that ( now Extreme Boardsports ) and move our business to Worthing…..and we are still here and now into our 4
th year.

How did you get into windsurfing?

We decided to learn windsurfing in 1984, along with probably 35 million other people as at the time it was the fastest growing sport in the world. We had our lessons and sailed at the lake mentioned above , We both loved windsurfing so much that when the opportunity arose to take over the lake…..we jumped at the chance.

Favorite windsurfing spot?

Easy…..after 25 years and nearly 30 visits it has to be BARBADOS ……But, Worthing is also a fantastic place to sail and that’s why we moved here.

Favorite discipline?

Just blasting about on a good swell and a 5.0 sail

Favorite windsurfing moment?

Every powered up session ……and definitely powered up in Barbados !

How do you keep fit and healthy?

Windsurfing, that’s it……buy Stand-Up Paddle is my aim when the weather suits.

Plans for 2009?

As much windsurfing and as many holidays as possible.
